Lead Change

The essence of change is that two stories are competing for the future.

The existing story is big, heavy, and familiar with known routines, habits, and predictable rewards. It can be your strategy, a process, a product, a service, a customer, or a market. Many people are naturally hesitant to leave what they know.

In fact, given a lack of information, some people will choose the most bizarre and pathological way to explain the change.

Leaders determine which story wins.

Leaders win by building buy-in to overcome the status quo of the existing story. They make the new story -- and the path to get there -- more clear and more compelling. I help leaders make the new story "heavier" than the old story, so the team embraces the change.

I make the change easier and less stressful

Change requires a combination of logic and emotion. I help leaders fully engage the heads and hearts of their people on these critical issues:

1. Purpose/Direction: A case for change, a destination, and reason to believe are essential to success. Together we build a change charter.

2. Path: A shared road to the future reduces stress and increases confidence.

3. Place: A clear role for the individual in the present and future creates confidence that "I" have value here.

4. Pain: A way to understand people’s history, losses, and grief legitimizes the difficulty of the change and respects people. Ignore the pain and you will pay the price for years.

5. Platform: A known platform for maintaining conversations and getting answers throughout the change reduces fears and focuses efforts.

“Feelings created during a change don’t die. They come back to haunt you--or help you--for years.”

"In the midst of a challenging international change, Dave made it natural for my leadership team to first define where we want to go and then build how we will get there."
